President's Message
The Bone Marrow Donor Programme is in the business of miracles – because what else can it be, when a perfect stranger makes a commitment that can save someone else’s life. That’s what the BMDP is all about – recruiting donors who are willing to make that gesture - and connecting them with patients who would not survive otherwise.
So, while bone marrow transplants are increasingly the preferred treatment for many blood diseases, families are getting smaller which means very few patients today have the option of finding a sibling donor. It is vital, therefore that the BMDP continues to grow our local register to make sure that we can provide that perfectly matched volunteer bone marrow donor who may be the only chance of life for these patients.
This means reaching out to the community, recruiting new volunteers and paying to tissue type each of these so that they can be included on the register. Fund raising therefore becomes integral as the cost of tissue typing each new donor is S$150.00. Targeting 5,000 new donors each year, plus the costs of running the BMDP, this means we need S$1,000,000 each year to make sure these patients get the best chance of survival.
