BMDP Search Process

Once BMDP receives a request to find a patient match from a transplant centre, a search is immediately activated. The search starts with the local register and will expand as required and instructed by the transplant centre coordinator. It is important to note that BMDP maintains close contact with your doctor throughout the following stages of finding a matched donor.

Preliminary Search Request received from Transplant Centre

BMDP receives request from transplant centre

Preliminary BMDP Report

The search begins the moment we receive preliminary search report from your transplant centre. Our search coordinators will conduct preliminary searches to determine the best potential match for patients in need of a transplant. This information is then forwarded to our doctors for a selection. We maintain contact with doctors in real time to ensure there is no time lag should a potential match be found.

Activate Potential Donor for Confirmatory Test

Should the HLA codes match, the donor will be contacted as the most probable match to a patient and for a series of confirmatory tests to take place. Results of the donor’s HLA typing will then be forwarded to the patient’s doctor in preparation for a transplant. If there are no matches, our search coordinators will continue to search the registry until the best potential match is found.

Donor Activated for Health Screening/Donor Work-Up

If results from confirmatory test reflect a 100% match, the donor will be activated to attend a health screening with a doctor, who will advise with one out of the 2 methods of bone marrow donation. In the meantime, the patient will undergo full chemotherapy in preparation to receive stem cells from the donor.
